ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday launched the PM Youth Chromebook Scheme, under which 500,000 refurbished Chromebooks and internet devices will be distributed to students across the country over the next two years.
At the launch ceremony in Islamabad, the prime minister handed over laptops and internet devices to high-performing Grade 9 students and students of seminaries, marking the start of the distribution.
Addressing the ceremony, the prime minister described students as Pakistan’s real asset, saying the country was beginning a journey towards empowering its young people and widening their access to modern education.
He contrasted the pace of the new scheme with earlier efforts, noting that previous Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz governments had distributed 600,000 laptops over 10 years, while 500,000 Chromebooks would now reach students within two years.
The prime minister stressed the need to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to meet contemporary challenges, adding that talent and hard work were not restricted by wealth or poverty.
Earlier, Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Chairman Rana Mashhood said the Tokyo Technology Care Foundation had taken practical steps to provide digital facilities to 500,000 Pakistani students, and that overseas Pakistanis had regained confidence in the government and wanted to contribute to the country’s development.
The prime minister also said at least 27 Danish schools were being built across the country, offering excellent facilities with all services free of charge, and noted that the institutions had enabled deserving students to pursue education and access opportunities to advance.
